Pramaana Labs was founded in 2023 in Boston to make audit evidence traceable by default. We build provenance infrastructure for teams that cannot afford to discover a gap during a restatement.
Origin
A restatement nobody could explain
In late 2022, Krishnan Raghavan was brought in to help a mid-size financial services firm reconstruct the source of a restatement. The numbers were clearly wrong. Nobody could say where they came from.
The workpapers pointed to source documents. The source documents had changed. Nobody had tracked the revision. Three months and several hundred billable hours later, the team had a plausible theory, not a provenance chain. The restatement was resolved. The underlying problem, no systematic way to trace a figure back to its source document, was not.
Krishnan left the engagement convinced that the problem was not about better auditors or more careful processes. It was about tools. Document management systems were built for storage and retrieval. Workpaper platforms were built for structure and sign-off. Nothing was built to maintain the citation relationship between a number in a workpaper and the record that produced it.
Pramaana Labs started with a single prototype: a parser that could read a board package and a trial balance, identify shared figures, and build a citation map between them. The prototype worked well enough that two audit partners at different firms asked to pilot it. The product emerged from those pilots.

How we think about the work
Three principles that come from the domain, not from a values workshop.

Evidence should be traceable by default
Traceability is not a feature you layer on after the fact. It has to be built into the data model from the start. Every figure we process is linked to its source at ingest. You do not turn on tracing, it is always on.

The auditor's judgment stays with the auditor
Pramaana surfaces citations and confidence scores. Auditors confirm or override. We do not make assertions about what the right answer is. The professional judgment, and the liability that comes with it, belongs to the person doing the audit.

A trace record is only worth something if it cannot be altered
The whole value of a provenance chain is that it reflects what actually happened. A trace record that can be retroactively edited is no better than a note in a margin. Ours cannot be changed after the fact. That is not a feature, it is the definition of what we are building.
